25th Anniversary Show

15 December 2017 – 24 February 2018

Opening : 15 December 2017, 6:30 p.m.

CIMA Gallery’s biography of building itself to become one of India’s premier galleries began after two seismic and violent political events – demolition of the Babri Masjid and the Mumbai bomb blasts. For art and the artist’s communities, this was fertile ground.

CIMA Gallery’s first two exhibitions were – WOUNDS (February 1993) and Trends and Images (November 1993). WOUNDS was opened in Calcutta before the gallery’s construction was completed. It was sponsored by Tata Steel, then under the stewardship of Russi Mody. WOUNDS travelled to New Delhi but could not travel to Mumbai because of the serial bomb blasts. TRENDS & IMAGES was the exhibition which formally launched the completed gallery space. Both WOUNDS and TRENDS & IMAGES set standards of exhibiting curated art shows. In 2001, CIMA curated and presented another seminal and landmark exhibition ART OF BENGAL – PAST & PRESENT. For the first time, an art show was produced which began the process of revealing, the history and context of contemporary art of Bengal.

From its inception, CIMA has established norms and standards which contributed to the way art was shown to the public. CIMA’s impact wasn’t only national. It was the first gallery to take contemporary Indian Art outside of the Indian borders. Chamatkara which travelled to London in 1996 and Tryst With Destiny – Art of Modern India was held in Singapore in collaboration with, The Singapore Art Museum. This exhibition was to mark, India’s 50th year of Independence in 1997.

To celebrate twenty-five years of exhibiting art and creating benchmarks, CIMA has curated a large exhibition which will be in two parts.

Relook will encapsulate the different periods of the history of modern, Indian art which CIMA ‘s past exhibitions have explored. Relook opens on 15 December, 2017 in CIMA Gallery.
