Born in 1960, Jayasri Burman completed her art education from Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan, in 1979 and from Visual College of Art, Kolkata in 1980. In 1984, she also practised art under the guidance of Monseuir Ceizerzi of France.

The allegorical use of myths and use of the mythic as metaphor in modern art, even by the mythoclastic artists, has always been evident. Some of the more traditionally oriented of the modern artists, like Marc Chagall, Jean Miro, Sakti Burman and Dharmanarayan Dasgupta have not been averse to weaving fable and fairy tale-like narratives in their paintings, albeit in allegorical vein, with innuendoes. Jayasri Burman, gets into a child mode, with her sinew lines delineating childlike images of women and children in dreamland situations. It celebrates and at the same time laments, for the loss of the child’s world of innocence and wonder. The sadness is perhaps for the losses which accompany becoming a mature painter which Jayasri is.
