Arko Datto
Arko Datto (b. 1986) is an art and documentary photographer who focuses on cultural shifts resulting from larger political conditions in South Asia and Southeast Asia. His works cover a range of contemporary issues such as digital surveillance, displacement of populations, and ecological destruction. Datto initially studied theoretical science in Paris and completed his master’s degrees in theoretical physics and pure mathematics before pursuing photojournalism in Denmark. Although he works across many genres, a documentary approach with social commentary remains central to his work. Datto aims to question what it means to be a photographer in the digital age while playing the role of observer and commentator on critical issues. He pursues narratives on seemingly disparate topics, including forced migration, disappearing islands, and the psychosomatic stress of captive animals. Through diverse visual languages and styles, Datto pushes the boundaries of still and moving images, exploring threads of inquiry into the existential dilemmas of our times.
