Soham Gupta
Based in Calcutta, Soham Gupta’s (b. 1988) work constantly moves between the realm of documentary photography, art and the written word. He responds to themes of loneliness and isolation, of abuse and pain, of scarred pasts and uncertain futures, sexual tensions and existential dilemmas. Soham Gupta’s photographic approach beautifully blends elements of both art and cinema, utilizing the chiaroscuro technique to create striking and evocative portraits. His work captures the experiences of those living on the streets with a profound sensitivity and depth, inviting viewers to connect with their stories on a personal level. Through his art, Gupta challenges societal norms and shines a light on marginalized communities with compassion and nuance. Plucking out images from the urban margins is like highlighting quotations that are noted, read, remembered and referenced. Like quotes, in Gupta’s hands they acquire autonomy and that freezes them into permanence through repetition, refusing to be swept out of sight by political rhetoric. There’s a precarious atmosphere around the images, a volatile charge kept on a leash that seems to be straining to rupture and rip apart the social order.
